Two friends decided to make a sports podcast that takes place and applies to students here at school. Taking inspiration from the podcasts “Off-Track with Hinch and Rossi,” and “Joe Picks A World Cup Team,” senior Josh Oluwaboro and junior Jack White now host a podcast about sports, featuring this school. Now partnered with Common Sense, you can find this podcast on the Common Sense website, Youtube, and their main platform, Spotify.
Primarily talking about sports, this growing podcast has so far touched on football, basketball, G.O.A.T athlete debates and college and professional sports. To relate to other audiences, they have implemented fun and engaging topics. “Game Time” has guest appearances from students and is open to teachers as well. Athletic director Alton Lightsey was their first staff guest. “I honestly encourage anyone to come on ‘Game Time,’ you don’t even need to know anything about sports,” Oluwaboro said.
A notable guest with frequent appearances has been senior Aiden Post. Post is good friends with Oluwaboro and White and they originally proposed the idea of being a guest earlier this year. After his first experience with the podcast, Post fell in love with the idea. “I am kind of a recurring guest and I enjoy it every time as I love to talk all types of sports with those guys and we like to talk about hot takes, which is fun to do as well,” Post said.
They record their episodes during lunch, in Lightsey’s office. They are currently in a transition period when it comes to developing these episodes, meaning they are now changing how they organize and film. They used to record this podcast with one microphone that they passed on to whoever was speaking, and used photography teacher Afua Kyeremeh’s DSLR camera to film. However, they have moved on to a bigger and better setup. They have incorporated a producer, senior Satvik Gudipati, who has provided a camera to film the main table. They also added a second and third mic, one for each of the two hosts and leaving one for the guest table. They also have two phone setups for alternate angles. “[Lightsey] is the one who helped us the most, because without him we wouldn’t have a place to film,” Oluwaboro said.
Oluwaboro and White have put forth a lot of effort into making their episodes fun for listeners and fans. Their list of favorite episodes includes ones that have yet to be filmed. They plan to interview a professional athlete at some point in late March or early April with race driver and Fox Sports IndyCar commentator James Hinchcliffe. Out of the episodes they have already finished, the one debating about Rudolph the Reindeer has been a favorite of theirs. “I would say the Rudolph episode because of the amount of fun we had debating Rudolph being a system reindeer, and that’s quite honestly the whole point, a vessel to make people laugh and have a good time,” Oluwaboro said.
Regarding the future goals for “Game Time with Jack and Josh,” they hope to have a live show for their March Madness episode. That would mean that they set up to film an episode in the Commons that people could watch live. White said students would be able to give live feedback and opinions during filming. They also hope to receive more recognition and viewership from students. “We want to have detailed analysis of sports games, and hopefully feature high profile guests in the future,” White said.
