Sophomore Jeremiah Ofori began his football career in Aug. 2024 and after a month of playing was asked to join the varsity team. Ofori hopes to improve his skills for next year’s season.
Ofori made his decision to join the football team because of his friends who requested that he join the team. “All my friends told me to join,” Ofori said.
Starting his season on JV Ofori was playing as a right guard but he wanted more, Ofori wanted to be moved up to varsity and midway through the season the varsity coach made the decision to call him up to the varsity team. After joining the team Ofori said that he was proud and it felt rewarding to get called up. “It felt pretty good and rewarding,” Ofori said.
After making it up to varsity Ofori said that the level of the players that he was playing with increased. He said that the practices were more intense and the expectations were higher. “It was harder practice, more expectations and more intense,” Ofori said.
Ofori said that his football career had only started this season and he had no experience going into joining the team. Since he had never played football before this year his expectations for his season were not to make varsity. “I had no experience going into the season,” Ofori said.
After a tough start to the season the team managed to turn their season around making it to the state playoffs but fell short of the championship. Ofori said that the team managed to learn from what went wrong and fix it in order to turn their season around “we started off rough and we learned and we came out strong,” Ofori said.
Sophomore Brody Sullivan who was a teammate of Ofori on JV said that as a teammate he was helpful and he would always improve the team spirit. “He was very uplifting and he also helped me study the playbook,” Sullivan said.
Sophomore Thano Naum who was a teammate of Ofori on JV said that on the field he was supportive and that he was happy that Ofori was moved up to varsity “He was a good teammate and I thought he supported the team on the offensive line and i’m happy for him that he went up to varsity,” Naum said.
In terms of a future career Ofori said that he will continue to play in his high school years and that he is uncertain about a career in college. “I’m playing next year but not sure about college,“ Ofori said.
After the season ended Ofori said that he learned more than just how to play football and that he learned how to work together on a team, a feeling of trust and how to take responsibility for himself.“I learnt comradery, teamwork and responsibility,” Ofori said.
After moving up to varsity Ofori said that there were challenges and one of them was athleticism and skill. “Varsity players are bigger, stronger and more athletic,” Ofori said.
