As the seasons change and the holidays approach, gift-giving is at its all-time high. Finding a gift besides books can be challenging for those who are big readers. From one reader to another, here is a holiday gift guide for your beloved readers.
The first and most apparent is books. But it can be hard to choose what books to get and get books they still need to own. A good way to avoid a repeat gift is to ask for their wishlist. Nine out of 10 times, readers have a list of books they want. Whether it’s an Amazon wishlist or one in the notes app, they likely have one that gives you an easy way to gift without buying something they already own.
Annotation supplies are another perfect gift. Readers of every genre love to tab and annotate their books as they read them. Annotation supplies like pens, markers, and tabs can be easily bought at your local craft store or Amazon. An assortment of tabs in different colors can be purchased for around $5 to $10. While good quality pens and markers can be a little pricey, there is no need to break the bank. My favorite is Zebra Milliners; they come in a 15-pack for only $18. My favorite pens for annotating are the Pilot G2 premium gel roller pens, and you can get a dozen for $14.
A Kindle is a perfect substitute for reading a physical book in bed. It’s a pricier gift ranging from about $100 – $200 but is well worth it. You can also get Kindle Unlimited with the purchase, which gives readers access to a mountain of free books from hundreds of different genres and authors. Kindles are super lightweight and easy to use and come in various types. Amazon recently released their newest Kindle, the Kindle Colorsoft, making it the first Kindle to have a colored screen, allowing reading graphic novels and mangas to be more immersive. Kindles also make it easier to carry many books with you at once in a small electronic form, rather than packing multiple big paperbacks.
Another great book-related gift is a book light. The ideal reading space can make or break your mood; reading in harsh fluorescent lights can damper it. A good lamp with warm lighting can be enough not to strain your eyes but also make a comfortable environment to sit down with a good book. Like a lamp, a small book light that can clip onto your book can also help light up the page. Depending on the size and company, these can go anywhere from $5.99 to $35.
Lastly, a book-adjacent gift is merchandise based on someone’s favorite book. There are so many talented artists and creators on Instagram and Etsy who make sweatshirts, bookmarks, personalized book embossers and more, all about books. The Bookish Goods is just one phenomenal small business website that creates any book merch you could want.
