Whether a teacher or a student, music helps this school get through the day. Apple and Google Music are the second and third most popular music services available to the public, respectively. Spotify is number one.
Spotify, founded in 2008, is a music streaming platform offering millions of songs, podcasts, and curated playlists. It stands out as the best option for high schoolers thanks to its large music library, personalized recommendations and affordable Student Plan.
Starting in 2015, Spotify released an in-app feature called “Your Year in Music.” Spotify, in 2016, released Spotify wrapped. A new and improved version of “Your Year in Music,” Spotify wrapped is an annual event that allows users to view their Spotify activity over the past year. Spotify wrapped includes the user’s top songs, artists, and genres and the number of minutes streamed. Spotify wrapped is usually released between Nov. 30 and Dec.r 6, but the date varies each year since it has started.
Spotify Wrapped has become a widely anticipated event for music lovers. According to Frontiers in Psychology, “The most popular music streaming platform is Spotify, which has over 365 million monthly active users globally.” The platform, founded in Stockholm in 2006, has impacted how people interact with music through cool features like wrapped, celebrating the user’s top music choices of the year.
This year, wrapped came out on the later side of the suggested dates, on Wednesday, Dec. 4. Sophomore Madison Luxenberg said that she listens to Spotify throughout her day, especially in school. “My Spotify wrapped is affected by what I listen to in school because, during the school day, I find myself listening to calmer and quieter music while during the day or at night I find myself listening to louder and more hype music,” Luxenberg said.
Senior Santiago Villiers said he was genuinely surprised by his top artists. “The artists that came for my top artists of the year were not who I thought would come up,” Villiers said.
Spotify wrapped also has a feature that tells the total amount of music listened to in minutes. For Luxenberg, she recorded 22,369 minutes listened to. But for Villiers, he doubled Luxenbergs and put up an even 50,000 minutes.
The final feature of Spotify wrapped shows users what each month’s vibe was based on the music they listened to. For example, if the user listened to The feature shows the monthly vibe that the user had, according to the top three artists of the month. Spotify will come up with a phrase for that month. Junior Vikram Mishra said March was his “Chill Catwalk Rap” phase, May was his “1920s Harlem Renaissance Jazz” season and June was his Boujee clean rap hip hop moment.
