Senior year is filled with traditions, from senior sunrise and breakfast, to senior picnic and sunset. One of the most anticipated is senior skip day, which took place this year on Friday, Nov. 1.
Since there would be no school on Monday, Nov. 4, and Tuesday, Nov. 5, due to the end of the quarter and then election day, senior skip day being that Friday gave seniors a five-day weekend. Since many colleges had an early action deadline on Nov. 1, seniors were able to use the day to finish and submit any last-minute applications.
Any senior who was a fall athlete and had a game on Nov. 1 had to be in their classes that day. That was the case for senior Elizabeth Griffin. Griffin is on varsity girls’ soccer and the team had a state quarterfinal that day in Baltimore. In order for her to be able to play, she had to come to school. Griffin came to school for third and fourth period but spent her morning working on college applications and relaxing before her game. “I woke up at like 9 and my dad and I sat in bed seeing what I could do for the morning. We decided to work on my college essays and then go get coffee as our rewards for doing something. Then I drove myself to school and went to the third and fourth period,” Griffin said.
Students may have used their extra free day very differently. Senior Anna Jeyachandran used her day to relax and run errands. Since Jeyachandran did not have a sports game thay day she was able to participate in skip day. For Jeyachandran, part of relaxing and taking time to take care of herself included sleeping in and going to the mall. “I used my day off to go to my favorite stores in the mall,” Jeyachandran said.
Senior Lexie Lindauer also used her day to relax before coming back to school for rehearsals for the school play. Lindauer spent her day relaxing on her own. She caught up on a show she was watching and spent the day in bed until she had play practice. “I slept until like 12 o’clock and then I ate breakfast. Then I watched some TV, until I had to go to rehearsal at 2:30. I was at rehearsal until 6 o’clock,” Lindauer said.
However seniors spent their day, most of the class gathered that night to cheer on football, poms and cheer seniors at their senior night game.
