Students get home after a long school day and immediately check ESPN for the latest sports news and updates. In particular, junior Landon Brener has notifications on for ESPN, FOX Sports, CBS Sports and more as he sits and waits for Devante Adams to be traded to his favorite team, the Washington Commanders.
Sports have become an intricate part of today’s society, and fans are interested in keeping up with the daily news. Insiders have become key in people receiving sports updates for example on Twitter (now X) famous insiders like Shams Charania, Adam Schefter and Jeff Passan.
Insiders like Charania and Schefter break news within an instant with news including trades, roster cuts and extensions. Senior Shivani Jain said, “I have sleeper notifications on for football as well as my dad giving me information.”
Lots of people keep up in different ways like Jain using Sleeper. These app notifications keep people up to date the second the news is broken. Junior Ethan Knighten said, “I have various different apps with notifications to keep me updated and also to help my fantasy team.”
People can also get their news from watching television channels like ESPN, CBS Sports, etc. Shows like Sportscenter recap the previous day’s game and discuss different news and rumors in the sports world. Senior football player Ben Phillips said, “Usually I watch ESPN or another TV show to keep up.”
In this new social media generation, sports fans use social media to get their news. On TikTok, some videos on the for-you page are sports updates. One creator, Tyler Cohen, has a daily NFL news update where he goes over all the rumors and news that happened that day. Other creators on TikTok posted reactions to trades when former Cleveland Browns receiver Amari Cooper got traded to the Bills.
Podcasts have recently become more popular, with new sports stars and personalities sharing their thoughts on sports news and updates. These podcasts, including the New Heights podcast with the Kelce brothers, the Pat Mcafee show and the GoJo and Golic podcast, are a new and fun way to receive sports updates. Knighten said, “I watch different clips of podcasts that are entertaining and provide new insights into different news.”
Students also like to have conversations about news and the latest updates in the sports universe. Students have many group chats where they bicker with friends and share the latest updates. Knighten said, “I usually use the ESPN app or the Real app and send it to the fantasy group chat and we have conversations with the boys.”
The Real app is a relatively new app which released in February 2020. This app has new intricate features which include player birthdays, and betting on the app. This app provides a new twist to sports apps compared to the regular ESPN and FOX sports. Junior Ethan Knighten said, “I like the Real app because it is way different than apps like ESPN and it has way more features.”
