Every October, there’s a spark in the popularity of Halloween movies to get in the scary spirit. Movie franchises such as “Halloween,” “Friday the 13th” and “Scream” are all classic go-to options.
Finding a good Halloween movie starts with finding the genre you like the most. This could be sci-fi, slasher, zombie, supernatural or comedic. Junior Maxwell Scherr said, “I usually like to watch slasher movies because I feel like they’re more interesting and entertaining than other genres.”
Junior Krish Balkee prefers sci-fi. “I like most horror movies, but I would say that my favorite genre would have to be sci-fi because of the mysterious element that It provides,” Balkee said.
Another important factor that could play into picking the best Halloween movie is the actors are known for their strong performances in horror movies. These could be big names such as Jamie Lee Curtis from “Halloween,” Robert Enguld from “A Nightmare on Elm Street” or Neve Campbell from “Scream.”
Students like junior Aava Nik said that actors play a large role in the enjoyment of the movie. “I really like Jamie Lee Curtis because she keeps coming back every time they make a new movie and honestly she’s the reason why I keep watching them,” Nik said.
Other students think the cast doesn’t matter that much. “I personally think that the movie itself and the script and topic matter more than the actors involved,” Balkee said.
“It” in 2017 was the highest grossing Halloween movie of all time, according to IMDB, “It” brought in $702 million e followed be “Jaws” in 1975, which brought in $483 million and “The Exorcist” in 1972, which brought in $430 million.
While the box office sales imply that the films mentioned previously are the best Halloween movies, that doesn’t represent everyone’s opinion. For example, Scherr said, “My personal favorite Halloween movie is ‘Scream’ and that entire franchise because I like the twists and turns of the story that keep you on the edge of your seat and it’s funny as well.”
Similarly to Scherr, Nik’s opinion also differs from that of the highest grossing Halloween movies list. “I would say that my favorite Halloween movie is ‘Halloween’ itself and that entire franchise with Michael Myers. It’s my favorite because I also like the actors and actresses and how well they play the role,” Nik said.
While these two students disagree with the list, others actually do agree with it. “If I had to choose one horror movie to be my favorite, It would be IT or IT Chapter Two because they really are good Sci-fi movies and I also like to watch them with my parents before Halloween as a tradition,” Balkee said.
These three students show that students have diverse opinions about which Halloween movie is the best and even though you can look at different aspects, they will probably have different opinions on which are the best.
