Halloween is over, which means that the holidays are upon us. People may jump straight to Christmas and forget the best holiday, Thanksgiving, which provides time to spend with family, admit gratitude, and get overly stuffed with turkey and cranberry sauce.
Thanksgiving takes place on Thursday, Nov. 28, this year and people may look past it, as it’s the holiday lumped between Halloween and the winter religious holidays. Right after Halloween ends, on Nov. 1, the Christmas decorations start going up, but only occasionally will you find people decorating for Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving highlights spending time with family more than the other holidays do. It just may be the day that brings out the best in us, as we admit what we are truly grateful for as we feast on delicious food. Students say this is their favorite aspect of the American holiday. “My favorite part of Thanksgiving is spending time with my family. My family always has a wonderful dinner together every year,” senior Alex Okun said.
Students say that their favorite aspects of Thanksgiving involve spending time with their family. “[My favorite part] is having family over and playing a family football game in California,” freshman Jake Beck said.
The second biggest activity of the holiday is, of course, the feast. Rivaling every other holiday, Thanksgiving single-handedly takes the cake for having the best food. Sitting down with family, you stare at the massive, glazed turkey surrounded by dishes of mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, cranberry sauce and stuffing. I’ve also found it to be fun to cook turkey and other dishes with my family. This sentiment is shared by other students as well. “My favorite part of Thanksgiving is the dinner with my family and all the home-cooked meals, [as well as] the board games and watching football with my dad and uncles,” freshman Max Dates said.
Another great aspect of the holiday is the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade, which takes place in New York City. It has been a staple of the holiday since 1928. The American Kennel Club’s National Dog Show is another event to watch on the holiday, but the big events to watch are all the football games that occur on Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving also takes place during the peak month of fall, when the weather finally cools and the leaves change. It is a favorite season for many and is also the time when places like Starbucks bring out their fall drinks. It is also the time to watch fall shows and movies such as the Peanuts Thanksgiving special.
