When I was a kid, I remember being so excited to go to the store and get a Halloween costume with my parents. I would wait all month to be able to wear it, trick or treat around the neighborhood and show it to everyone in school during the Halloween parade.
People who don’t dress up tend to say it is because they don’t like to. “I just don’t really see the point in it. It used to be really fun when I was in elementary school and we did the costume parade but now that there’s none of that and it feels like I’m too old to walk around the neighborhood with my parents while I trick or treat [so] it doesn’t really feel fun to dress up,” senior Donnie Galloway said.
It may seem as though less people are dressing up but there are still some people who are in the spooky spirit. “I’ve been dressing up for Halloween since I was about five years old and I’ve also dressed up all four years, along with dressing up outside of school. During high school, I usually will go out with friends on Halloween and on the weekends,” senior Rebecca Ogorodnikov said.
Of the people who continue to dress up, group costumes are popular. For example, the Athletic Intern Team, seniors Rebecca Ogorodnikov and Leanne Brown, along with junior Sara Pinzon, all dressed up as minions and Athletic Trainer Brenna Allen dressed up as Gru from the “Despicable Me” movies. Even with all the school that seniors get though, Brown and her friends still find a way to dress up for Halloween. “I’ve only done two group costumes and they were both this year. Me and the athletic trainer team did ‘Despicable Me’ characters and my friends and I did ‘Alice in Wonderland’ characters and I really enjoyed it,” Brown said.

Halloween is supposed to be a fun time to express yourself or have fun with your friends. However, students like Galloway say that there isn’t a point anymore because they’re not kids anymore. “I feel like I’m too old to dress up, not only that but I have a lot of schoolwork now and I don’t really have time to dress up because I’m trying to get all my homework done, apply to colleges and train for volleyball,” senior Temi Ademola said.
Halloween may seem like a pointless day, but Brown uses it as a way to have fun and express herself. “I have dressed up all four years of high school because I think it’s really fun to dress up and express yourself. Especially since this year since it’s my last Halloween in high school I wanted to make it memorable,” Brown said.
