Understand the social world more and succeed at any field in life by joining the History Society every Thursday at lunch in room 180 for lectures, activities, discussions, games and more.
Members of the club believe that the History Society is perfect for people who love history and want to be around others who share their same passion. People tend to gravitate towards peers with similar interests, and clubs are great for finding those connections. “I have a deep love for social studies and I wanted to be surrounded by like minded people,” senior club president Kian Hamidzadeh said.
The importance of the subject of history itself is also stressed. “History permits us to understand the mistakes of the past and ratify them in the future,” the club spreadsheet said.
Learning about history can also open up doors for people later in life. This is because the ability to analyze and interpret historical events and information gives people the skills needed to thrive in other career fields. For example, “When you get a history degree or you get a history background, you’re really setting yourself up for law,” History Society club sponsor and history teacher Jeffery Benya said.
History Society also offers fun incentives for staying active in the club. This year, Hamidzadeh takes his role as club president seriously, and is even willing to give up his own money to make the club a fun experience for everyone. “We have 100 unique posters set up around the school, with any individual who is able to find all of them, receiving $25 from me personally,” Hamidzadeh said.
Club leadership tried their best to make the meetings as fun as possible too. While meetings are sometimes just a lecture on something, meetings are often other alternative activities. “During our meetings, we start off with a Today in History then move on to the presentation of the individual who signed up to present that day. On other days, we hold debates on tough to swallow subjects as well as interactive games,” Hamidzadeh said.
Quality club leadership is extremely important to the History Society. It is crucial that applicants genuinely care about the well-being and continuity of the club. “We have a rigorous process to become an officer at the History Society. We strive for commitment and quality hence our application process follows that,” Hamidzadeh said.
This extensive application filled with writing a historical thesis and creating a presentation appears to have paid off. When Hamidzadeh first joined the club, he noticed that “At the time they were very small and disorganized but we made do,” Hamidzadeh said.
However, the club leadership turned the club around in under a year. This past year, they thrived, earning the Club Championship hosted by the Academic Coalition of Extracurriculars.
While it is still an impressive feat, it should be noted that the Academic Coalition of Extracurriculars is run by Hamidzadeh, but envelops 14 different clubs and organizations.
