Taking a spin on the classic 1985 comedy by the same name, the Breakfast Club, lead by senior Anna Lizondo, gives students an opportunity to hang out, eat freshly made pancakes and play games during lunch.
Club President, Lizondo, came up with the idea in her freshman-year government class. She and her friends would go out for pancakes after a hard test in the class. One day, Lizondo said she wondered why she and her friends couldn’t just eat breakfast in school, and the idea for the Breakfast Club came to her.
Lizondo pitched the idea to one of her friends, senior and Breakfast Club Vice President Maria Daraselia, and she loved it. The idea for the Breakfast Club was submitted in the spring of 2023, and the club officially started at the start of the 2023-2024 school year.
Similar to in the film ‘The Breakfast Club,’ the club’s intention is to be a place for anyone to come and hangout. No matter who a student hangs out with or their interests, the Breakfast Club is open to them. The club has formed a community of students from a variety of cliques throughout the school.
When constructing the club, Lizondo chose to make the title literal. The club advertises itself as a place for lovers of breakfast food. The members talk about and cook a variety of breakfast foods, they then hold breakfast competitions and share breakfast pictures. The club strives for a diverse membership of students who can share breakfast items from around the world.
Each meeting has a kind of breakfast food, usually pancakes. The club will prepare food and have a group chatting while working hot plates, making fresh pancakes for everyone. “It’s a chill place to hang out with friends and eat good food,” club sponsor Sarah Spillman said.
When the club is not pouring batter or syrup, they participate in games or activities. While listening to music, the Breakfast Club can be found playing jeopardy or hangman. Certain weeks, the club participates in charity based conversations and activities to give back.
When it comes to finances, the club presidents pay the funds. These funds include pancake batter and toppings and activity supplies. They are aiming to hold fundraisers this year. “We’re trying to work with the club director Mr. Schwartz to be put on the Wootton club budget because honestly, our materials aren’t expensive,” Lizondo said.
Not only will fundraisers be for the club’s benefit, but the Breakfast Club also fundraises for donating. To keep with the breakfast theme, they share presentations and hold food drives to donate to charities such as the Manna Food Center and Montgomery County Food Council to increase food access to people across the county.
Starting their second year, the Breakfast Club has a variety of returning and new members throughout all grades. “I love the environment, it’s the perfect place to have fun and eat with people and enjoy everyone’s company,” senior and Karaoke Klub President Nikhil Arya said.
