The chicken sandwich is thought to have been created in 1946 by a restaurant owner named Truett Cathy, who is now the chairman and founder of Chick-fil-A. Throughout the years, new fast food restaurants popped up around the U.S. that sold chicken sandwiches, such as Poppeye’s, KFC and Wendy’s.
Debates sparked up on which chicken sandwich is above all, so I took matters into my own hands and decided to rank them all. My first stop was Poppeys in the Kentlands. I got my chicken sandwich in a large paper bag. I took out pickles from the sandwich and tried it with and without ketchup. The sandwich is greasy and has mayonnaise on it; the chicken is well cooked and tender, but I was full after two bites. However, the taste was solid. The Poppeys sandwich gets an overall rating of 8.3/10.
My next stop was Chick-fil-A. The sandwich was fresh, hot, not too greasy, and not too filling: It was perfect. The sandwich gets an overall rating of 10/10, taking the number one spot on the list so far;, let’s see if anyone can tie it. Junior Alina Parkih said, “Chick-fil-A is definitely my favorite place to grab a sandwich because it is so quick and convenient and tastes great.” Senior Brenden Famulare agreed that his top two chicken sandwiches are Chick-fil-A and Popeyes. Chick-fil-A wins the taste battle but Popeyes wins in the overall size of the sandwich.”
The following day I headed over to Isaac’s Poultry Market, a famous chicken restaurant relatively new to the area. Bethesda voted their chicken sandwiches the best, so let’s see if it lives up to the label. The sandwich came with crispy chicken between two pieces of bread with a sauce and coleslaw on the inside. It. Was. Perfect. The balance of the flavors between the chicken and sauce was incredible, the chicken sandwich gets a 9.8/10, only lower than Chick-fil-A due to being on the pricier side.
Following this I tried the Wingstop, Hangry Joe’s, and McDonald’s chicken sandwiches. The McDonalds sandwich was pretty dry and bland: the chicken was hot but tasted fake, and the sandwich got an overall rating of 5.5/10. The Wingstop chicken sandwich is solid: the chicken is hot and crispy, but it lacks a wow factor, receiving a well-deserved rating of 8/10. The Hangry Joe’s sandwich is big and messy; it comes with two tenders and coleslaw. It has a good, authentic taste, receiving an overall rating of 8.8/10. Junior Gabrielly Gbebry said that the sandwich was “pretty good.”
Last but not least, the Wingstop chicken sandwich was on the drier side but nonetheless had a great overall taste and looked presentable receiving an overall rating of 8/10. All the sandwiches have their qualities and my recommendations are: 1. Chick-fil-A, 2. ISSAC’S; and 3. Hangry Joe’s.
