Senior planning and SGA organized a school-wide tie-dye event on Wednesday, Oct. 16, after sophomores and juniors took the PSAT in the morning. This event was meant for students to have a mental health break from school and so they could tie-dye class shirts in their class color that was to be worn during school the day before homecoming.
Students who were not testing got to sleep in before arriving at school to tie-dye. Sophomores and juniors had to take the practice SAT in the morning. After the PSAT, students started arriving and everyone went to their first-period class for attendance.
The afternoon was broken up into two different blocks, where students chose between different options, including tie-dying the white shirt that they purchased. The white spirit shirts were handed out at the tie-dye location on the portable field.
Juniors and seniors tie-dyed during the first block from 12:10-1:10 p.m. Sophomores and freshmen tie-dyed during the second block from 1:20-2:20 p.m. If students did not purchase a white T-shirt, they could still participate in the day.
There were alternative options like movies, crafts, playing cards, board games, indoor sports, lawn games and a study hall.
Sophomores enjoyed the afternoon off after a stressful morning taking the PSAT. “Taking the PSAT was very stressful, especially the day before since I was studying like crazy. When it was finally over, it was nice knowing that I did not have classes and could just hang out around the school. I tie-dyed with the freshman and went on the football field to play games. When we were done tie dying we hung out on the lawn which was very fun. It was a very relaxing afternoon after sitting in a chair all morning,” sophomore Neeki Naderi said.
Freshmen enjoyed their first-ever tye-dye event and hope to see a lot more wellness days and special events. “I enjoyed the event a lot and would like to see more wellness days in the future. I got to socialize with new people I hadn’t met and it was fun seeing the results of my shirt. I went to study hall after tye dye event and studied for a test I had coming up with my friends. I slept until 12 p.m. and came to school after the sophomores took the PSAT,” freshman Yanji Wang said.
The event was designed to create unity among grade levels and give students a break from school to remember to have fun. “I liked tie-dying with the freshmen because I don’t normally talk to them a lot, so it was fun to get to do an activity with them. The break was nice after the PSAT since it was a very stressful morning staring at a computer taking a test. I hope we have more mental health days since it was a nice break from school and getting to know more grade levels,” sophomore Jolie Ginsburg said.
