Girls’ varsity volleyball has a 10-2 streak this season, with losses against Richard Montgomery and Georgetown Day School and victories against BCC, Poolesville, Whitman and more.
The team’s first home game was against BCC on Sept. 9 where they won 3-0 with amazing saves. The last set was close with the score being tied at one point, yet the team was able to win all three sets. The team worked together and communicated on the court to ensure the win. “I’m looking forward to playing with my team,” junior Sara Foster said.
Currently, the team is playing strong with only two losses this season yet the team continues to think about how they can improve on the court. “I think over the season a way to stay improved is to stay focused in our practices, always look for ways in which we can get better and to make sure we don’t get complacent in where we are at,” junior Kirsten Sinkler said.
In 2023, the team was given the title of girls’ volleyball county champions for their third year in a row. “We work very hard on specific aspects of our game play during practice to prepare ourselves to make the county game as well as win it,” junior Sofia Sossa said.
In their most recent games, including Walt Whitman on Oct. 7 and Rockville on Oct. 4, the team won 3-0 against both, with earlier wins in the season against Damascus, Watkins Mill and Poolesville. “I think our team has been playing very well so far in our regular game schedule. We do have harder games coming up in the next few weeks so even if we’re doing well now, we will have to keep working hard,” Sossa said.
The team is planning on winning county champions for the fourth time this year by putting in hard work and practice. “To defend our title as county champions we have to stay focused on our goals, use our last couple of games to really prepare ourselves and work out any problems that we may have,” Sinkler said.
The team consists of 15 girls, including four seniors, and Coach Mary Malinauskas. “It is important to communicate more on the court as well as keeping a good mix of not being too competitive,” Foster said.
The team has chants that they shout at games to support their teammates. “Our team is trying to be a lot louder and more cheerful because that’s what scares the other teams,” Sossa said.
The team’s next games are a home game against Urbana today, and an away game against Northwest on Oct. 23 at 6 p.m.. The team lost their most recent game against Churchill on Oct. 14 with a score of 3-2.
