Summer Camp Opportunities Promote Education (SCOPE) Club raises money to send underprivileged kids to summer camps. It is led by co-presidents and seniors Jenna Goldberg and Lainey Berman.
SCOPE raises money to send kids from low-income families to summer camps to learn important life skills and create memories. “SCOPE bridges the gap by making summer camp accessible to children from financially disadvantaged families,” Goldberg said.
According to the SCOPE website, camp allows children to grow socially, emotionally, and physically while providing meaningful and fun interactions with children and excellent adult role models. During the duration of the club, the co-presidents want to “help raise money and awareness for SCOPE and share the impact of sleep away camp,” Berman said.
Sleepaway camp creates forever bonds and friendships. “Sleepaway camp has a big impact on people and creates bonds and everyone deserves to experience it,” Berman said.
In the Northeast, it costs $1,500 to send a child to camp for two weeks and $750 in the Midwest, Southeast, and Southwest. The purpose is to help send kids to sleepaway camps where they can learn life skills and form friendships that will last a lifetime. “There are so many benefits of going to camp and to help send kids that would not have the opportunity to attend camp is a great feeling,” Goldberg said.
The SCOPE Club wants to teach the benefits of fundraising and overall have a great time. They want to teach students the importance of giving back to other families, especially to kids who can’t attend sleepaway camp SCOPE holds multiple fundraisers throughout the year. Examples of their fundraisers include Ledos, Label Daddy, Chipotle, March Madness and more. According to Goldberg, SCOPE plans to hold more fundraisers and activities.
Out of school, SCOPE has leadership boards for different grade levels and adults. “I have participated since my freshman year and I participate outside of school with the Junior Leadership Committee for SCOPE,” Goldberg said.
With school clubs, committees and more, one of SCOPE’s biggest goals is to continue its expansion across the country. “Help to encourage its mission and even more so continuing to grow its reach across the country,” Co-chair of the student committee, Sam Roberts said.
SCOPE support reinforces the connection between academic achievement and summer camp’s enriched recreational and educational experiences. 100% of SCOPE campership kids commit to staying in school. “We can support them for multiple summers and even more so that we now all start supporting them through college through our college scholarships,” Roberts said.
SCOPE provides plenty of leadership opportunities for different ages as well as opportunities to start fundraisers or to volunteer. SCOPE has a board of directors, a Junior Leadership Committee, young professionals (associate board) and over 30 clubs and groups nationwide. Certain events they hold are benefits, golf and pickleball events, cocktail parties, marathons and more.
SCOPE makes a large amount of money through fundraising. According to SCOPE, birthdays, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, graduation projects, any other life milestones and social media are great ways to fundraise and give back.
