The new limited series show “Baby Reindeer” started streaming on Netflix on Apr. 11. The British black comedy drama-thriller is based on a fictionalized retelling of the director Richard Gadd’s own real experiences with a female stalker.
With only seven episodes, this show is able to capture two years of intense stalking, violence and drug abuse. “I have seen many shows and movies that are rated PG 13 or rated R but this is the first film where the acting and script felt very real and was honestly tough to watch,” junior Bianca Diamond said.
The show consists of the main character, Donny, being approached by a new customer who claims they have no money and continues to come back each day with more and more intricate lies. After some time, Donny realizes what is happening is not normal. The show captures how Donny deals with his stalker and the actions he takes because of it.
The heart of the show captures the unsettling experience with a stalker. The show conveys how a stalker can deeply alter and affect your life. The show brings humor into the script, which lightens the mood. “At first I thought it was going to be more of a comedic show because one of the characters Martha had a very lighthearted personality, but as the show continued I realized Martha was crazy and not funny,” senior Jaiden Aze said.
Though this show deals with heavy material, the story becomes addicting and captivating. “I actually really liked it and thought it was an interesting story and how crazy that this actually happened in real life. I did not know that this level of stalking was a real thing,” junior Tali Rosen said.
Videos online on websites such as YouTube show the real life stalker, Martha explaining her side of the story and her views on the Netflix show. “I was trying to study for my math test, but I kept getting distracted by watching a video on what the behind the scenes of the show had to say,” senior Tati Pacheco said.
This show is a must-watch. “I would definitely recommend this show. It shocked me at first and honestly put me in a bad mood. Despite that I think it’s worth it to watch and it can really show you another side of life that is not usually talked about,” senior Lindsey McNey said.
