Given the 10 weeks students have off for summer break, the possibilities are endless for how students plan to spend it.
Common summer jobs include lifeguarding, coaching a swim team, being a camp counselor or working at a local ice cream shop. While some people spend their summers trying to make cash, others participate in sports tournaments, pre-season summer league games, sleepaway camp, vacation and relaxing at their beach house.
Freshman Hannah Chen plays golf year round but her schedule becomes the heaviest during the summer. “My summer plan is mostly golf tournaments, however when I’m not participating in those, I’m planning on spending time with friends and at the beach,” Chen said.
For the past eight summers, sophomore Justin Heller has gone to sleepaway camp in Pennsylvania. Each summer, Heller spends seven weeks living in a bunk, not using cell phones or electronics and hanging out with his best friends. “Sleepaway camp has always been a major part of my life. Sure it takes up a lot of my summer but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I’ve met some of my best friends there and just get to hangout and play sports with them all summer long. I’m looking forward to one last summer,” Heller said.
Junior Emily Teague has spent her past two summers lifeguarding and plans to return for a third. Teague lifeguards at her neighborhood pool. There she works pretty much all summer with shifts ranging from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 3 p.m to 10 p.m.. “Lifeguarding has always been something I’ve wanted to do since I was younger so once I was old enough I did the training and got certified. I really enjoy lifeguarding because I get to do it with a bunch of my friends and sit out in the sun all day,” Teague said.
Students such as sophomore Megan Lomotan are packing up their summer. Lomotan is balancing both college showcases for soccer and a new job at local ice cream shop, Carmen’s. “Carmen’s is pretty lenient with scheduling as long as I tell them ahead of time so it works perfectly for my soccer showcases. I’m also really excited about my summer job at Carmen’s because it’s fun working with people my own age and seeing everyone in the community stop by for ice cream,” Lomaton said.
Freshman Reya Kurup is spending her summer traveling, being a camp counselor, volunteering and doing dance intensives. “For five weeks over the summer I have dance, then I’m traveling to Costa Rica, California, and possibly Florida to visit colleges for my brother. After that I am being a counselor in training at Bullis summer camp for two weeks, and volunteering at a hospital. My summer is pretty packed but I’m really excited for everything I have coming up,” Kurup said.
