As spring break began, students had completed their final tests and submitted their long-overdue assignments, ready for a much-needed, stress-free break. While some students and their families stayed in the area, others took trips far from home for a change in climate and scenery. Either way, spring break was an opportunity to make memories with family and experience new and exciting opportunities.
Southern states such as South Carolina, North Carolina and Florida are all popular destinations among students. They offer a variety of fun activities and warm weather for students to relax and enjoy, before the final two and a half months of school kick in. Junior Ryan Kaufman said, “I’m excited to go to Hilton Head, South Carolina, with my family because I used to go there when I was little and have a lot of good memories there. I prefer going to warmer climates during spring break because it gives me a break from Maryland’s horrible bipolar weather.”
Students may take spring break as an opportunity to close off the ski season with one more trip to the slopes. Sophomore Danielle Rubin said, “I’m heading out to Vail, Colorado, to ski with my friends and family. Taking spring break as an opportunity to travel places to ski is one of the best ways of relaxing and having fun. Although I love getting a tan, and a warmer climate is usually what I prefer, I’m so excited to ski all of spring break, and enjoy the mountains and different landscapes Colorado has to offer.”
While there is a variety of spring break destinations that students visit, one stands above the rest. Florida is a popular destination for students and their families. It offers a warmer climate, a busy environment, a quick flight, and amusement parks such as Disneyland. Physical Education teacher Anthony Pykosh said, ”My guess is that Florida is the most popular destination for students. I think many students go there because it’s a quick flight, many great beaches, and much warmer weather.”
Sophomore Alina Parikh said, “I’m heading out to Florida for Spring break with my mom, I go there almost every available long weekend I have. It’s just such a great place to relax, and the beaches are wonderful, the flight isn’t long either. I’ve gone two spring breaks in a row, and every time I somehow bump into someone I know, It’s pretty crazy how many people go there every spring break.”
While students and their families may choose to stay in the country, others leave. Southern countries such as Mexico, the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas, are all popular destinations. They offer a hot climate, beaches, resorts and a wide range of cultures.
Still other students take a longer flight to the other side of the world, whether it is to see family, experience a new culture, or unwind in a completely different setting. Popular destinations include Italy, France and the United Kingdom.
With spring break behind us, students file back into a school with one more quarter to pull through before summer break. Students are excited to see friends but dread the many tests and assignments to come as they transition back into the busy school environment.
