As the lacrosse season begins, excitement builds throughout the program. With new coaches at the helm and a mix of seasoned players and fresh talent, expectations are high for an exhilarating season ahead.
For the girls’ team, the appointment of new coach Shannon Davis has brought a renewed sense of energy and enthusiasm.
Junior Emily Teague reflects on the welcoming atmosphere fostered by the coaching staff. “The coaches are very welcoming, they put a big emphasis on the fun aspect of the game, wanting everyone to learn the game and succeed,” Teague said.
Last year, the girls made it all the way to the regional finals and they’re looking to make even more noise this year. Senior Captains Waverly Nakashima and Emerson Noble look to set the standard in the coming weeks.
Sophomore Maya Bellamy shares her optimism for the season. “I have high expectations for this season since we have a lot of interest this year and are now in 3A where we have a chance to go far. The coaches are great and have already taught so much,” Bellamy said.
On the boys’ side, coach Ralph Bernardo has quickly become a beloved figure among the players. Junior Zachary Blumberg describes tryouts as “a good bonding experience for everyone, getting the chance to meet new and up and coming players. Coach Bernardo has definitely made the experience better because he’s not only a coach but he’s a friend to everyone on the team. He has the ability to correct any mistake a player makes and improve their ability to play at a higher level,” Blumberg said.
Senior Captain Daniel Son also praised Bernardo, emphasizing the values of hard work, commitment and unity as the team prepares for a challenging season opener against Churchill. “As long as we focus on our plays, stick to the game plan, and work hard, we have a good shot. We just have to keep the game manageable,” Son said.
With a relatively young roster, the boys’ team faces the task of rebuilding after the departure of key players from last year’s lineup. Junior Mathew Deleon emerges as a pivotal figure, tasked with leading a new defensive unit as the sole returning starter. Despite the challenges, the team remains focused on their collective goal of success on the field.
The upcoming matches against Churchill serve as early tests for both teams, offering an opportunity to showcase their skills and teamwork. The girls’ team will face Churchill away on Mar. 21 while the boys team will host them at home simultaneously. It’s a chance for the entire school community to show their support and cheer on these talented athletes.
As the season unfolds, anticipation builds for the moments of triumph and growth that lie ahead. With dedicated coaching, passionate players, and unwavering support, both the boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams are poised for an unforgettable season to come.
