As the school year comes to an end we are getting closer to the start of the fall sports season. We have some highly touted rising senior athletes and teams who have the potential to make a playoff run.
Expect the football team to have heavy leadership from three-year varsity players, juniors Larry Feldman and Arian Nyjando. Feldman is a safety who covers a lot of ground with his speed and Nyjando can make a lot of plays in the backfield while rushing the quarterback. “I’m so excited to carry on the legacy of the senior from the past year. This up and coming season should be fun,” Feldman said.
Boys’ soccer has multiple collegiate level prospects. Junior Matthew Kopsidas was all over the place last year making airborne saves between the posts. Kopsidas showed great leadership as a junior; he’s a natural leader with tremendous ability. The striker duo of juniors Alek Wroblewski and Andy Ram, are a scoring threat that will be difficult for teams to defend. Wroblewski has tekkers that nobody can defend, and Ram has a deep shooting range causing defenders to have to play father from the goal. Defender CJ Zmuda transferred from Saint Johns College High School in the winter or 2018 and he will be able to make great contributions to the defense. “Watch us win states,” junior Griffin Ford said.
Field hockey will have a big senior class. Juniors Jordan Rubin and Leah Kellert will be a defensive duo who will shut down the forwards of opposing teams. Junior Mia Silver will lead the midfield and make plays on both ends. The leading scorer will most likely be forward Kendall Clark. “I can’t wait to get back on the field. I’ve been anticipating it since last fall when the season ended,” Clark said.
The golf team has five rising seniors. Juniors Yuvi Singh and captain Ben Bloch will play important, yet different roles. Bloch will be the heart and soul of the team. When a teammate needs someone to get up in their face and motivate them, Bloch is the guy. Singh is expected to fill in the shoes of two seniors who graduated from the starting lineup last season. “I hate Churchill. It’s my least favorite school in North America. Roll Pats,” Bloch said.
The cross country team has three rising senior captains, Joe De Jong, Dylan Horkan and Scott Sritharan. They have worked extremely hard in preparation for the fall season. “I run six days a week with one rest day, I want to be at my best for the season,” De Jong said.
The girls’ soccer team will have an experienced defense that concedes few goals. The defense has a large group of rising seniors such as Alexa Folk and Casey Schuler. Miranda Wright plays center defensive mid and Sarah Levine will be in goal. Macy Fewell will be a goal scoring threat. “Soccer season is my favorite time of year,” junior Sabrina Shah said.
