The soccer team had senior night on Oct. 19 against Blake. They comfortably won this game and played seniors a majority of the game.

Senior Caroline Wang had two goals. “It felt really good to win on senior night. There were a lot of fans there so I’m glad we could win in front of all of them,” senior captain Deanna Schaeffer said.

The team started their playoff run on Oct. 31 at home on a bitterly cold night against Northwest, a team they had played and beat earlier in the season. Much like the first game against the team it was a high scoring affair at home. In their previous match against Northwest, the team won 4-1 with goals coming from freshman Zara Chavoshi and Wang adding a hat-trick.

Wangs’ success from the last game against Northwest carried over as she played well against them again. She scored the team’s only two goals of the night and played good defense as well Chavoshi, the lone freshman on the team, also carried over success from her last game against Northwest. Her free kicks were nicely placed to a spot where the team could capitalize. Senior goalie Jill Geline also did a good job of keeping the team in the game with clutch saves when the team needed them. “I think that Caroline and Jill both played really well tonight. We definitely could not have been in a position to win the game without them playing the way that they did,” senior Ashley Pitt said.

Despite their best efforts the team’s season came to an end as they lost the game 3-2. The game was a more physical game than their last matchup and the referees were letting the two teams duke it out to see who would win, calling a relatively equal number of penalties in the game. “I thought the referees definitely missed some calls that probably would have changed the momentum of the entire game. But, they didn’t so we just had to play on and try to win the game ourselves,” senior Bella Lazzaro said.

Looking ahead for next season the team has 11 seniors graduating but also has a team full of juniors and sophomores and freshman waiting in the wings to take their place and try to improve on this years’ effort. “I think overall this season went pretty well. We didn’t get the result we wanted but in the end we tried our hardest and I think Wootton soccer is in good hands for the future,” Schaeffer said.
