Following the news of the death of Assistant Administrator Joseph DuBoyce on Aug. 7, the pep rally held on Sept. 15 was the first chance at unifying the school in a show of spirit for the community and the upcoming year.
The pep rally included performances from the cheerleaders and the poms as well as the introduction of all of the fall sports teams. On top of the usual events, the theme for the 2017 homecoming dance was introduced.
The theme for this year was chosen by the SGA to be Hollywood. In contrast with ideas from previous years like cereal, students are hopeful for Hollywood as an idea with wide appeal and range of potential ideas for the student body. “I like Hollywood because it is a cool topic with a lot of ideas behind it and because it’s not cereal,” senior Alex Hodes said.
Most importantly, the pep rally was an opportunity for the SGA and the school to unite the community and to set the stage for the year they wish to have. “Wootton’s been through a lot in the past years and I want the ninth graders-I want everybody to have school spirit and feel like they have a home here at Wootton,” SGA teacher advisor Nia Cresham said.
SGA President Nabila Okudo shared a similar sentiment with her hopes to “create an atmosphere in which students feel excited to come together and show off school spirit.”
Okudo has many expectations to fill from a school that accused the SGA in previous years of being out of touch with the students and of being unresponsive to what was really wanted. Still, Okudo is optimistic for the year, saying she will be “looking at what has been done in the past and finding different ways to make them more efficient.”
