The Small Things Matter club held its first meeting on Oct. 18 during lunch. Juniors Nikki Cohen and Abby Needleman formed the club on the idea that small acts of kindness make a big impact.
The club works under the umbrella organization Small Things Matter. The organization is committed to helping others in need through its food, literacy and charity crafting programs. Needleman and Cohen work hard to bring these programs into school. “They both have great work ethics. They really try to mobilize their club members as much as possible and motivate them to be active in the club,” club sponsor and math teacher Jonida Kocani said.
Needleman approached Kocani at the beginning of last school year asking to sponsor their club. Needleman and Cohen created the club because they believed in the message of Small Things Matter. “We had both volunteered for the Small Things Matter organization in the past and wanted to work with them to spread their positive messages and with our community at Wootton,” Cohen said.
Small Things Matter is currently working on a coat drive to help the food-insecure families in Takoma Park and Silver Spring. The coat drive will be held from Nov. 15-30 In Silver Spring and Takoma Park at Piney Branch Elementary School and Takoma Park Elementary School. “We are still sorting out the details for the coat drive but we hope to better advertise it this year and get more coats than we did last year,” Cohen said.
The organization has done beneficial things to help the local community. They have done things like backpack distribution to families in Takoma Park, Silver Spring and Rockville and held a back-to-school drive in August to help the community. Students can find out more about the Small Things Matter organization on their website, Smallthingsmatter.org.
The club gained new members this school year because of the club fair on Sept.26 and are hoping to get their new members involved. They set up at the club fair hoping to grow the size of their club to spread their message “Our goal for the club this year is to get our members involved not only inside of school, but through events out of school with Small Things Matter,” Needleman said.
The club not only gives help to people in the community but also helps kids at this school have a sense of pride and accomplishment. “I joined Small Things Matter to contribute to society in any way I could. I felt that this club was a good way to be involved in both the school culture as well as my community,” former member and now club secretary junior Charlie Balian said.
