Super Mario Bros. Movie breaks records
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a computer-animated adventure film released on Apr. 5 and was based on Super Mario, a platform game series created by Nintendo starring Mario.
With help from Princess Peach, Mario gets ready to square off against the all-powerful Bowser to stop his plans from conquering the world. The writing’s been on the wall basically from the moment The Super Mario Bros. Movie first hit theaters, but after weeks of being at the top of the domestic box office, Universal, Illumination, and Nintendo’s big movie collaboration has officially made $1 billion from the film.
It’s been less than a full month since The Super Mario Bros. Movie premiered, but in those few short weeks, the project’s already raked in $490 million domestically and $532 million internationally, making it the fifth pandemic-era movie to cross the $1 billion mark. Given how the film only just opened in markets including South Korea and Japan within the past few days, it’s all but assured to make quite a bit more money before its theatrical run comes to an end.
There are different ways to watch The Super Mario Bros. Movie online in the United States: you can use a streaming service such as Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon Prime Video. You can also rent or buy the movie on iTunes or Google Play. The film is also premiering in theaters all over the country.
The ensemble voice cast includes Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen, and Fred Armisen. The film features a story for the brothers Mario and Luigi, Italian-American plumbers who are transported to an alternate world and become entangled in a battle between the Mushroom Kingdom, led by Princess Peach, and the Koopas, led by Bowser.
Senior Myles Reyes said The Super Mario Bros movie may be one of the most fun experiences he’s ever had in a cinema as a Mario fan. “I really liked the animations and visuals of the movie,” Reyes said.
After the critical and commercial failure of the live-action film Super Mario Bros. (1993), Nintendo became reluctant to license its intellectual properties for film adaptations. Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto became interested in developing another film, and through Nintendo’s work with Universal Parks & Resorts to create Super Nintendo World, he met with Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri.
By 2016, the two were discussing a Mario film and, in January 2018, Nintendo announced that it would collaborate with Illumination and Universal to produce the film. Production was underway by 2020, and the cast was announced in September 2021.
The film received mixed reviews from critics, though audience reception was more positive. It has grossed over $1.056 billion worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2023 and the eighth-highest-grossing animated film. It set multiple box-office records, including records for the biggest worldwide opening weekend for an animated film and the highest-grossing film based on a video game.
On Google Reviews, the audience rating summary was 4.7 based on 4,124 ratings. Senior Adriana Cruz watched The Super Mario Bros. the week it came out. “It was actually good and I was cracking up a lot all throughout the movie,” Cruz said.
Junior Evan Yi grew up playing Mario games and always enjoyed the cartoons. “I rate it a solid 8.5/10,” Yi said.
The directors of the film are Aaron Horvath, and Michael Jelenic, and was distributed by Universal Pictures. Produced by, Chris Meledandri; Shigeru Miyamoto, the film is a central series of the greater Mario franchise.
