Varsity baseball looks ready for playoff run
The varsity baseball team has had a successful season so far, as the midway point of the season is now behind us. The team has fought hard to get to its 6-5 winning record, and they hope to maintain a winning record heading into the postseason. Lets run through the Patriot’s games since we last left off:
The Patriots were supposed to go head to head with Blair on Mar. 25, but that game got postponed due to weather. On Mar. 27, the Pats hosted the Clarksburg Coyotes and took care of business, beating them 6-1. They then traveled to Seneca Valley to face off against the Screaming Eagles, where they were able to etch a W into the win column in a final score of 11-3. “We felt good heading into spring break, but we knew we hadn’t played our toughest games yet,” senior Ethan Goldstein said.
During spring break, the Patriots had a tough matchup against a talented Whitman team, and the boys lost 10-1. After spring break, the boys hosted Richard Montgomery on Apr. 12, and were able to come out with the win 4-3. After this game the Patriots hit a bit of a rough patch, losing three close games. On Apr. 14, they traveled to Blair and played a hard-fought game against the Blazers, but came up short, losing 3-2. The next day, the Pats hosted the Walter Johnson Wildcats in a heavyweight bout of “W” schools. The high scoring affair ended by a score of 13-10 in favor of the Wildcats. Finally, the Patriots faced off the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Barons on their turf on Apr. 18. Again, the Pats fought hard for seven innings but ultimately came up short and lost 7-5. But the boys turned it around leading up to their game against our biggest rival. “We knew we had to lock in and keep our heads up to finish the season strong,” senior Brandon Sun said.
On Apr. 20, the boys faced off against our mortal enemies, the Churchill Bulldogs. The Bulldogs won last year’s matchup, so the boys were hungry to notch a win this year. The Bulldogs got out to an early 4-1 lead, but a left field dinger by ace pitcher and senior captain Ryan Kunst and excellent hitting by captain Josh Erd led the Patriots on a comeback. The Pats would win the game 8-6, giving them an important win, which will help them in playoff seeding. “It felt great hitting that homerun, especially against Churchill,” Kunst said.
The Patriots played three games this past week, starting with hosting Quince Orchard on Apr. 25, a game that they won 10-4. On Apr. 26, they traveled to Whitman and lost 2-0. They capped off their three-game week by traveling to Rockville, but they would come up short 3-1.
