JV boys’ lacrosse wraps up strong season
The JV boys’ lacrosse season started off on a great note beating two good teams, the Clarksburg Coyotes and the Whitman Vikings. However the boys still had a lot more games left and knew they had to stay focused. The Patriots had five tough games ahead of them, two of them being before spring break and the others right after.
On Mar. 27, the Patriots suited up to play the Walter Johnson Wildcats at home. The game started off low scoring, with great defensive play from both sides and multiple steals and saves, resulting in a fast-paced game. At the end of the half, the score was 2-1 WJ, but with rest going into the last half of the game the Patriots did not let up, scoring the first goal coming out of halftime. However, that goal was not enough, and the Patriots lost 4-2 after letting in two unanswered goals.
After that tough loss, the team looked forward to the last game before spring break, which was against Richard Montgomery at home on Mar. 30. This game was a dominant offensive game for the Patriots, who had the ball on their side most of the time, and at the end of the game the team managed to score 12 goals, the most they had scored yet, resulting in a 12-6 victory. ¨I think those two games were very different in a way because during WJ the team relied on our defense and the offense did not play that well, and during RM the team relied on our offense while the defense didn’t play that well. I think if both sides of the ball play well we can beat any team,¨ freshman Ashton Ingram said.
The team took some time off during spring break but were ready to get back to work for their game against BCC on Apr. 11. Coming out of springbreak the team looked rusty against BCC with lots of missed passes and turnovers. Although the Patriots managed to keep the game close, their turnovers got the best of them, and BCC won the game 6-4.
The next game was against Churchill, and the boys were not ready, losing 15-2 in a lopsided game. After the hard loss against Churchill, the team traveled to Paint Branch and managed to shake off the previous loss and win 10-2 against Paint Branch. The team finally showed dominance on both sides of the ball with the defense only letting up two goals and the offense scoring double digits. ¨After those two hard losses we knew we had to shake off the spring break rust quickly and once we got focused we then had a great game against Paint Branch and now we have momentum to push for the rest of the season,¨ sophomore Jonas Klein said.
In the final games against the Sherwood Warriors on April 21, the team lost 12-7, and against the Northwest Jaguars on April 25, they won 9-5. Eight athletes moved up to varsity to finish the end of the season.
