Warner Bros releases sequel, ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’
DC Comics created the first Shazam movie in 2019, and its sequel was released on Mar. 17.
On a scale of 1-10, Shazam! Fury of the Gods deserves a 7 because while its beginning and middle are slow, its ending and climax are intense.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods stars Zachary Levi as the protagonist and main hero, Shazam. Although he fits the role well visually, his acting and script are not perfect. His role is not as serious as depicted in the comics. Although he is a child, he still makes too many corny jokes, which takes away from the hero’s immense powers. If the focus of the movie were Shazam’s powers and his ability to stop evil, rather than silly jokes, the movie would be far more successful and would develop the character much better.
At the same time the movie is fun to watch and family friendly. If you have children who want to see a superhero movie but you are not sure which movies are appropriate for them, this movie is perfect.
While the movie is family friendly, this can be seen as a negative. Much of the audience wants to see violent action, with Shazam being ruthless and destroying bad guys. This doesn’t happen because the focus of the movie is being family friendly.
The film takes a step down with its choice of antagonist from the previous movie in the series. In the first Shazam movie the antagonist is more evil and has much worse intentions. This led to more being at stake and thus a better plot. The antagonist is also developed better in the first movie. In this movie the antagonist is introduced with no backstory or character development.
The best parts of the movie come at the end with a super action-packed and dramatic final fight. This saves the movie from failing. Had the writers of the movie used these action packed scenes throughout the movie, it would have succeeded more.
At the same time the movie does succeed at developing the protagonist, Shazam. Viewers can see how Shazam becomes more responsible and selfless in this second movie. In the first movie he is a scared child, while in this movie he makes a huge sacrifice in the end that develops his character.
The movie does shine in the department of entertainment. The movie is full of good laughs, great visuals and cool powers. The movie does not disappoint in entertaining an audience.
The movie succeeds at setting up a possible third movie. The movie leaves off with a cliffhanger in the post-credits scene, hinting at a possible return of Doctor Sivana, the antagonist of the first movie, in the next movie. Doctor Sivana proves to be a truly evil and powerful villain in the first movie and would make an incredible villain in the next movie.
