Biology, chemistry or physics: battle of sciences

Fetal pig dissections occur in biology classes.

Typically each year students at this school take a science course that ends up being either biology, chemistry or physics. Which science course do students most enjoy and which did they suffer through for the credit?

Honors biology, according to most students, is the most “busy work.” Most of the work in that class is labs using simulations or reading questions. Regardless of that fact, some people found biology to be the most interesting. Sophomore Ruthiga Veerasingham said that biology was her favorite because, “It’s more conceptual stuff and less math, which is more what physics and chemistry is.”

On the other hand, honors chemistry has the most support from the students at this school. “I like chemistry the most because I feel like biology is really easy to see, you see most of it on a daily basis, whereas for chemistry you have to work a little hard to find what you can’t see; you have to work on a molecular level. Physics is more conceptual and it requires less experiments, which I don’t prefer,” junior Brielle Rudolph said.

For most of the juniors and seniors in our school, biology was part of online school, which limited the hands-on experience that sophomores usually get to experience. This leads to most of the juniors and seniors enjoying chemistry more than biology or physics. Junior Megan Reid said, “I liked chemistry the best. I think my opinion of biology was impacted by having to take it virtually but I liked the math aspect of chemistry because it was easier for me to understand than some of the applications and concepts for biology and physics.”

That isn’t the only reason chemistry is the more favored science by students though. Junior Coby Pinto said, “I liked chemistry the best because the math was easy and the concepts were easy to understand.”

Honors physics is not as liked as the other two sciences. In biology, you get to do dissections and work with cells, and chemistry is full of labs, but physics tends to tailor to the calculations and concepts of physics, and most labs aren’t as enjoyable as the chemistry ones. Despite that fact, many find the class to be easier. Sophomore Elena Kim said, “While biology is my favorite because it is the most interesting, physics is the easiest for me.”

Now despite physics not having a strong liking, students don’t necessarily regret taking it. “While I liked biology the best, and chemistry isn’t that difficult either, I don’t regret taking physics. It’s definitely hard and easy to complain about but I think it’s taught me skills that I’m glad I’ve learnt before the next parts of my life, ” said sophomore Ojas Tare
