After a quick start to the season, the baseball team has lost three of their last four games and has a record of 8-5. They are currently ranked 61 in the state.
The team had another disappointing outcome at the game against Einstein when they lost on May 2. Einstein scored two runs soon into the game; however, the game was uneventful after that until the bottom of the sixth, where the team was able to tie the game up at two a piece. Einstein responded with two more runs in the top of the 7th, and the game ended with a final score of 4-2. Junior David Aharon had some input on the loss. “The game was really close and it was a tough loss, but I still think the team has been playing really well,” he said.
On May 1, the baseball team had an amazing comeback victory against Blair. The final score of the game 7-6. During the seventh inning the team went 6-2 down. The team was able to score five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the lead and secure the win, thanks to junior Gabe Pollack’s infield single. Senior Anthony Vondas came up big for the team, with three hits, two RBIs and a run of his own. Mariani had a great game as well, with two hits, two runs and an RBI.
On April 29, they lost to Bethesda-Chevy Chase 13-7. Sophomore Ryan Mariani batted 1.000 with three hits on a total of three at bats along with his two runs and two RBIs. Sophomore pitcher Harrison Cance had one run as well, in addition to his one hit and two RBIs. “I think we have been in a slump for the past couple of games, but I think we will be able to turn it around for the playoffs and hopefully states,” junior Jonah Dross said.
On April 27, the team played Walter Johnson, and lost by a small margin of one run. The final score was 5-4. The game required extra innings but Walter Johnson was able to quickly pull ahead to win.
Junior Nick Siegel is looking towards the playoffs and picking up some wins. “We had a good start to the season, and hopefully we can bring that momentum into playoffs,” Siegel said.
The team played Poolesville and Whitman, but they were too late to include in this issue. The team’s next games are back to back against Northwest and Blake on May 8.
