Sonia Vee: baking wizard
Sugar, spice and everything nice: these are the ingredients to the perfect cupcake. Sonia V. Ekonomo and her husband Jose Ekonomo from Sonia Vee’s Cupcakes know this all too well.
The Ekonomos first opened their shop located in the Kentlands in November of 2020. Sonia started baking after her father died to thank all of the people who were there for her. Soon she began to bake regularly and started getting custom orders from people to try different cupcake flavors.
This was all happening in their own house. It was then when the Ekonomos decided it was time to take their business to the next level and open a shop.
The store has a variety of flavors that Sonia created herself. The inspiration for her flavors were the customers themselves. The Ekonomos strive to use the freshest ingredients and design what the customers want.
It took almost two years for the couple to open their shop, and the pandemic didn’t make it any easier. “We couldn’t get inspections, inspectors wouldn’t come meet us face to face,” Jose said.
This did not stop them though, as they were able to open their store during the height of the pandemic. But, in the beginning, business was slow, since people wanted to stay safe and did not want to leave their homes. However, business has picked up since then.
The shop has a unique design, giving off the feel of a small French bakery. Using pictures from Etsy, the Ekonomos built a store with a welcoming and relaxing environment. Jose built almost everything himself: from the shelves to the tables.
The overall experience has been positive for the Ekonomos. “Our customers and the community have been very welcoming. We have had an incredible amount of support,” Jose said.
The store has unique flavors such as Fruity Pebbles and La Diabla, which is a chocolate-chocolate chip and habanero cupcake with chocolate jalapeño buttercream frosting, topped with red hots candy and two red fondant horns. You can even mix and match to make your own cupcake flavor. Sonia Vee’s Cupcakes also offers delicious cupcakes that are vegan and gluten free.
My personal favorite is a lemon cupcake, it has just the right amount of lemon and sugar. The icing is delicious and it is so pretty that it almost makes it sad to eat.
The store has 4.6 stars on Google Reviews and has some great feedback. Customers have said they are “the best cupcakes in the area.”
Jose said if they ever get negative feedback, they like to talk to the customer to make sure they make the experience better.
Sonia Vee’s Cupcakes has an amazing atmosphere with even better cupcakes, and is definitely a must visit.
