Summer Camps have returned: Are you going this year?
With last year being famous for all its cancellations, summer camps were no different. This year counties and states are opening up the rules and camps are in full effect for the summer. Kids all over the country can’t wait to see their camp friends who they got robbed from seeing last year.
Sleep-away camps are offering deals to allow campers who should have had their final summer as campers last year to have them this year instead. Instead of going to camp as a CIT or counselor, kids can go to camp as 10th graders instead of what they should be as 11th graders.
Other camps are even allowing kids to come to camp as CIT’s and campers. Camp Echo in New York is allowing their 11th grade kids to have the same privileges as CIT’s but still get to have props and moments they missed out on in their 10th grade year. “Last year was going to be my last year, but since camp was cancelled last year I’m going back this summer as a CIT and a 10th grader,” sophomore Ashlyn Fritz said.
Other students won’t get that same luxury as they will go to camp as what their age and grade designates them to. Being a counselor is a great summer job to have as it’s not just for the money, but it’s a chance to meet new people and have a blast of a summer. “I was a camper at my sleep away camp for seven years, and this year I’m going back as a counselor. I can’t wait to meet all my campers and to have an awesome summer,” junior Sam Gross said.
While some students are going to camp as counselors and CIT’s, others are still going as campers. Different camps have different systems and some have their campers be campers up until 12th grade. This is a good thing for those at these camps as being a camper trumps being a counselor and having to work all day.
Being in high school, a great job to get is a day camp counselor, getting to work with kids all day, have fun and get paid to do it. Local options are Bar-T and ESF summer camp.
With camps losing tons of money last year they are hiring as many people as they can so they can have more and more campers. It might be too late this year to get hired but it’s never too early to look for next year. “I’m working as a lifeguard this summer, but I got a day camp job already next year with a few of my friends and I already can’t wait,” sophomore Ethan Kuan said.
