New movie ThunderForce comes to Netflix this month
A new comedy/adventure strikes Netflix: “ThunderForce.” Starring Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer, this movie combines the classic superhero wanting to save humanity with up-to-date trends and humor.
The PG-13 movie was released to Netflix on Apr. 9. It is based on a brilliant scientist who creates a power that can be used against the world’s supervillains (miscreants). When scientist Emily Stanton’s high school former best friend Lydia injects herself with the experimental power, Stanton has no choice but to form a superhero duo, in an attempt to salvage her years of work.
New to Netflix, sophomores Jolie Graham and Ryan Kunst were eager to watch the premiere. “I think that this would be a really fun movie to watch with friends and experience comedy with adventure at the same time,” Graham said.
The movie features Fortnite references, which are relevant in a high schooler’s life. “I thought it was really cool that one of the main characters, Lydia, knew the dance that matched my favorite video game, and it was really funny to see an adult doing Fortnite moves,” Kunst said.
The movie also appeals to young women who aren’t used to seeing women power movies. This ties right in with women empowerment spreading through the film industry in recent years. “When I was little, most superhero movies were about men, so it is really nice to get to see the film industry changing their standards and showing strong women saving the world,” Graham said.
Not only has it been rare to see powerful women in past movies, but viewers have been excited to see that body positivity is represented in the movie. “It’s rare that you get to see a plus size superhero movie, so I’m really glad that the film industry is pushing the idea that to be a fit superhero with great strengths, you don’t need to have the ‘standard’ superhero body type,” Graham said.
The lead role, played by Spencer, impresses viewers after she has starred in numerous other films. “I knew that the character Emily looked familiar, and then I remembered that she was in the movies The Help and Hidden Figures and everytime I see her acting she improves,” Kunst said.
Thunderforce focuses on the details of how a superhero’s life is. “I thought it was crazy to see how much working out the superheroes did, especially Lydia, and it was crazy to be able to see Lydia lift a whole bus after gaining such strength in the course of weeks,” Kunst said.
The movie also appeals to parents watching with their children, playing songs from popular artists such as Glen Fray, WhiteSnake and ACDC. “When I watched the movie with my dad, not only did we get to bond, but he was able to enjoy some of his favorite songs from when he grew up, such as ‘Here I Go Again by WhiteSnake,” Kunst said.
