Tough loss against RM leads to comeback vs Northwest

The team came into the game against Richard Montgomery on Sept. 26 with a 3-1 record. Matched up against rival RM, the team was determined to come out with a win.

Both teams started off slow offensively with neither team able to find their offense. RM was able to push the attack toward the end of the half. After squeezing the ball between defenders, RM was able got an open shot and hit the bottom left corner of the goal, giving them the 1-0 lead. Early in the second half, the Patriots were aggressive on offense. After multiple attempts to get the ball into the box, the team finally Sophomore Natalie got a clean pass through to Matikyan. Matikyan was able to get the shot off before defenders had the chance to recover and hit the back of the goal, tying the score 1-1.

Following the Patriot goal, RM was once again able to get an open kick and score, making it 2-1. The Patriots were unable to get any offense after this and RM came away with the win. “It was a hard loss because we were in the game the whole time,” senior forward Miranda Wright said.

The Patriots were matched up against Sherwood on Sept. 28. The Patriots came in focused after losing their last game. The team started off strong with an early goal from junior forward Zara Chavoshi. Shortly after, Sherwood was able to creep into the box and score, tying the game at one each. The Patriots were on the attack toward the end of the first half. Senior forward Orley Strauss was able to maneuver around defenders past the outstretched hands of the goalie, giving them to 2-1 lead. Early in the second half Strauss was able once again to get into the box and score her second goal. Midway through the second half Matikyan scored in the bottom corner of the goal, giving the goalie no chance of stopping it. The Patriots finished with a 4-1 win. “It was a dominating win and I am proud that we were able to score this many goals following our loss,” Matikyan said.

The game on Oct. 4 against Northwest was too late to be included in this issue.
