The varsity softball team has a record of 7-3. In their past four games they are 2-2, dropping games to Northwest and Quince Orchard, while beating Clarksburg and Gaithersburg.

Senior center fielder Hannah Johnston is content with the team’s performance so far. “I think we have played very well this year, I am excited for the playoff push,” Johnston said.

The Patriots welcomed Quince Orchard on Apr. 4, losing 10-0. They weren’t able to get anything going after falling behind in the first inning. The Cougars were able to capitalize on every one of the Patriots’ errors, scoring after each of the four errors.

The team played Gaithersburg on Apr. 6, winning 12-2. The Patriots outclassed the Trojans, beating them in every facet of the game. The team tallied 14 hits to the Trojans’ three. They also were clean in the field, committing no errors. Johnston was excited by this win. “I think we’ll be able to take this momentum into the Northwest game,” Johnston said.

They then traveled to Northwest on Apr. 8. They weren’t able to keep the momentum, losing 12-2. This game was similar to the one played three days prior. The team fell behind early once again, and wasn’t able to get back into the game. They had multiple errors that the Jaguars were able to take advantage of.

Finally, the team traveled to Clarksburg on Apr. 10, winning 17-9. The team finally clicked, excelling on both offense and defense. Johnston led the way with three hits and six runs batted in. Junior catcher Shannon Roberts was happy with how the team bounced back after the loss. “I liked how we responded after the Northwest game,” Roberts said.

The Patriots played Whitman on Apr. 24, losing 9-1. The team wasn’t able to string together hits as they only were able to get four. The Vikings brought their bats, as they were able to record 10 hits. They were also solid in the field committing no errors for the Patriots to take advantage of. Johnston is still optimistic for the rest of the year. “I still think we have a very strong team,” Johnston said.

The Patriots took on Watkins Mill at home on Apr. 29, too late to be covered in this issue.
