Varsity baseball rebounds after slow start

Varsity baseball has not start they wanted to early in the season. With a record of 3-2 as of Apr. 2.

They started off the season with a game versus Blake. They controlled the game, winning 5-1. “We played hard from start to finish, and executed batting and fielding,” sophomore Nate Bowman said.

Their second game versus Damascus didn’t pan out the same way. The boys got off to a slow start, going down 4-0 at the bottom of the fourth. “We didn’t batt as well as we should’ve, there’s no excuses for that, and we can’t start out slow,” sophomore Miller Romm said.

The team fought hard untill the end, punching in the final two runs of the game in the fifth and seventh innings, but ultimately fell short of victory with a final score of 4-2.

Varsity has a deep pitcher rotation, led by seniors Harrison Cance and Ryan Mariani, juniors Dev Zoks and Conor Walsh, as well as sophomore Nate Bowman. Coach J.D. Marchand has a lot of options for his lineup each game.

Senior Harrison Cance got the start against rival school Churchill Bulldogs on Mar. 28. Marchand went with his senior leadership and experience for such an important game.

The team fielded well early on as the score was 0-0 going into the fourth inning. The Patriots fell behind 2-0 in the fourth. The Bulldogs got hot in the sixth, punching in four more runs.

The final score was 6-1, the Bulldogs ending on top. Hitting struggles made it hard for the team to keep up with the Bulldogs. “We’re not playing our best baseball. We know we have so much more potential than we showed versus Churchill, it’s a long season and we’ll make adjustments and figure it out,” senior Harrison Cance said.

They appeared to figure it out in their next matchup versus the Springbrook Blue Devils. The boys came out scorching hot, scoring six runs in the first inning to take a 6-0 lead. “We were batting well, and playing to our potential, we did what we knew we were capable of,” junior Andrew Misovec said.

The team fielded a shutout through five innings, and only gave up one run in the sixth. The success continued: They scored a run in the second, fourth, sixth, and seventh inning. Controlling all aspects of the game, Patriots finished on top 10-1.

It was a dominant victory and the players enjoyed every second of it. “It’s always fun to win, but it’s even better when you play a strong seven innings and have a complete team victory on the plate and in the field, and to do so convincingly is always special,” senior Harrison Cance said.

The team’s success carried on into the next game on Apr. 1, versus Richard Montgomery. They got up early, scoring seven runs in the first quarter. They with a final score of 10-4, patriots on top.

The boys had back to back games, and punished Magruder from start to finish. The final score was 15-1 in a patriot victory.
