Wrestling team looks to make run after back-to-back losses

The wrestling team played in their first tournament on Dec. 8 and Dec. 9, Aberdeen Duals, and five of the team’s wrestlers competed.

Junior Henry Wooley and sophomore Eric Liau both went undefeated through eight games. Sophomore Jason Liau finished with seven wins and one loss. His only loss came to a two-time state champion wrestler. The other two wrestlers were junior Ben Bloch, who finished with six wins and two losses’ and junior Benham Sari who finished with two wins and six loses. Sari said, “It was overall a good tournament and it was a good warm up for our upcoming matches.”

The Patriots played their first match on Dec. 10 against Rockville. Sophomore David Gordon wrestled at 106 and lost, Bloch wrestled 113 and won, Eric Liau wrestled at 120 and won. In addition Jason Liau at 126 won, sophomore Damian Dvarson at 145 lost, Wooley at 160 won, junior Brian Lee lost at 220 and Sari won at 280.

Overall the Patriots lost this match due to having to forfeit so many weight classes. Bloch said, “It was a good first match. I was proud of how everyone played and I’m looking forward to another opportunity to play them again.”

The team’s next match was on Dec. 12 against BCC. Bloch wrestled at 106 and lost, Eric Liau won at 113, Jason Liau won at 120, Dvarson lost at 145, Wooley won at 160, Lee won at 220, and Sari won at 280. Despite the Patriots effots they came short and ended up losing this match.

The Patriots following two matches were on Dec. 15, where they wrestled against both Gaithersburg and Blair. Gordon wrestled 106 and lost while Bloch at 113 won. Bloch was down 0-2 in the third period and ended up coming back to win the match for the Patriots 3-2. Eric Liau at 129 won, Jason Liau at 126 won, Dvarson at 145 lost, Wooley at 160 won and Sari at 280 lost. These were the scores for only the Blair half of the match.

The team then went on to take Gaithersburg. Gordon at 106, Bloch at 113, Jason Liau at 126, all won because of forfeits. The Gaithersburg wrestling team was not able to place anyone in those weight classes, so wins were given to those three players. Eric Liau ended up winning at 120, Wooley won at 160, Dvarson lost at 145 and Sari lost at 280. After a tough two matches the patriots came close, but couldn’t come home with a win. Wooley said, “We worked hard all offseason and it’s only the beginning of a long season. So far we have seen some good competition and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.”

So far this season, Wooley and Eric Liau are the only undefeated wrestlers. They have won all of their matches including those in the tournament. The team currently hasn’t won any matches, but their next match is on Dec.19.

The team has taken big losses in the fact that they are missing key players from last year. Jake Warner might be the biggest lost from last year. He brought leaadership to the team being on varsity for four years. Warner was also one of the best wrestlers in the state last year. Bloch will look to step up and try to fill the role that is missing.
