Team looks to continue success with counties nearing

After coming off the Quince Orchard Cougar Relays, the team was prepared to compete at the Viking Invitational on April 13 and 14.
On April 13, junior Mikhail Brown finished tied for second in the boys’ high jump event, jumping six feet. In the boys’ long jump event, junior Keith Cartwright finished fourth, jumping a total of 19 feet one inch. In the boy’s one-mile, junior John Riker finished eighth with a time of 4:35.76, a new season record for him. In the boys’ 100 meter race, Cartwright finished fifth, completing the event in 11.81 seconds.

In the girls’ 100-meter race, senior Ana Scherf finished fifth with a time of 13.24 seconds, a new season record for her. In the girls’ one-mile race, junior Jessica Trzeciak finished second, with a time of 5:20.67, a new personal record for her. In the girls’ DMR 1200-400-800-1600 meter race, the team consisting of juniors Erin Chelf, Madeline Grainger, Adna Trakic and sophomore Grace Osman finished third with a time of 13:19.80.

The athletes went back to work on April 14, hoping to continue their success from the previous day. In the boys’ one-mile race, senior Amir Van Gieson finished eighth with a time of 4:44.79, a new personal record for him.

In the boys’ two-mile race, Riker finished second, with a time of 9:56.45, setting a new personal record for him. He narrowly missed the top spot, as he finished only one second behind the leader. In the boys’ 4×400 meter race, the team of Cartwright, seniors Humza Mohiuddin and Ambrose Devine, and junior Shayne Brooks finished fourth with a time of 3:34.69.

In the girls’ 400 meter race, junior Kayla Hill finished fifth with a time of 1:00.60, a new personal record for her. In the girls’ 4×400 meter relay, the team of Hill, Scherf, Osman and junior Angel Porter finished second with a time of 4:06.55. In the girls’ shot put event, junior Mary Quackenbush finished seventh throwing the shot 26 feet 0.5 inches. In the girls’ discus event, junior Haoxuan Wang finished seventh, throwing the disc 71 feet and seven inches.

The team’s next meet was at home against BCC and WJ on April 17. In the boy’s 100- meter race, Cartwright finished first with a time of 11.8 seconds. In the boys’ 400-meter race, Brooks finished first with a time of 52.8 seconds, a new personal record for him. Brooks also finished first in the boys’ 110-meter hurdles, with a time of 17.5 seconds, also a new personal record. In the boys’ high jump event, Brown finished first, jumping five feet six inches. Cartwright finished first in the boys’ long jump event, jumping 19 feet 5.5 inches.

In the girls’ 400 meter race, Osman finished first with a time of 1:02.5, a new season record for her. In the girls’ 800 meter race, Chelf finished first with a time of 2:25.3, setting a new season record for her. In the girls’ discus event, Wang finished first, throwing the disc 82 feet, which is a new personal record for her. In the girls’ high jump event, freshman Iman Idrissa finished first, jumping four feet eight inches, a new personal record for her.

The team’s next meet is the Montgomery County Championships on May 9.
