Cold weather increases risk of main water breaking –
There are usually 1,800 water breaks per year but 1,200 out of 1,800 water breaks happen during November through February. According to WTOP, almost 40 percent of WSSC water mains are over 50 years old and the cold adds to the brittleness to the pipes, making it easier for the pipes to split. Earlier in the school year, Robert Frost had water pipes break. The WSSC replaces the broken pipes with zinc-coated ductile iron pipes, which adds 75 to 100 years of life to the pipes. Although the zinc-coated pipes cost more, it will be more beneficial in the long run.
