JV Wrestling: New team starts out year with defeat

As the weather gets colder, that can only mean one thing… the start of everyone’s favorite winter sport: JV wrestling.

The Patriots have been preparing for nine months, getting ready to face off against county rivals on the mat this year. After last year’s disappointing 3-5 record the team is ready to start out fresh. One wrestler to follow is sophomore Ben Bloch, who is looking to follow up his strong freshman campaign with another successful season. Bloch is excited for this new challenge this year, now that he is older and has experience. “I am so excited to wrestle again this season. I had a good year last year and now I’m ready to build on last year’s success,” Bloch said.

The wrestling season started out with a shutout loss at Damascus on Dec. 6. The team was unable to do anything right as the Hornets dominated them in every aspect of the match. The Patriots couldn’t earn easy points from mistakes that would’ve given them enough points to win. They were unable to consistently pin down their opponents. While it seemed like nothing went right, the Patriots can hold their heads high because of the determination that they showed. Not one wrestler went down without a fight, which is something that can be built on for the rest of the season. Bloch is still optimistic of the team’s chances this season.

“Even though we had a rough start, I still think we are good enough to have a successful season this year,” Bloch said.

Since the season is still young, the loyal are still excited for what can happen. Fans look forward to seeing exciting action, with skilled athletes that have worked hard to achieve their goals. Junior Alex Cohen, who watched a few matches last year, is still planning to be a supporter of the Patriots once again this winter. “I am looking forward to watching my friends wrestle this season,” Cohen said.

The Patriots’ next match is at home against Northwood on Dec. 19, followed by a Jan 3. Matchup against Northwest.
