Wrestling: Team effort will play role in their success

The wrestling team opened with the season against Urbana High School on Dec. 5. Urbana is one of the top teams in Maryland. The team lost but did better than they were expected.
Junior Jake Warner won his matches but it was not enough to help the team get the win. A loss from senior Walter Lyons did not help either. Seniors Jake Gross and Tony Hesseloff won their matches. Junior Spencer Tritto lost both of his matches while junior Ata Mustafa surprised everyone, pinning his opponent for his win. “It was a tough loss but they are one of the best schools in the county and I thought we played better than expected. Ata impressed me with his pin, I did not expect that from him,” Warner said.
The team then traveled to play against both Blair and Sherwood on Dec 10. Once again Warner won his matches. Lyons also won the matches while Hesseloff lost one of his matches against Blair while winning one against Sherwood. Gross did not perform as he wanted, losing both of his matches. The team lost to both schools and had not had any wins in their season yet. “I played well but it is a team effort and my wins were not enough to win the game,” Lyons said.
The team then played against Whitman on Dec. 13, looking for their first win. Players like Warner, Gross, Hesseloff, and Lyons won all of their matches.
With them all playing well the team took the lead and was hoping to get their first win. It came down to the final match, with heavyweight senior Justin Rudden on the Matt. Rudden pinned his opponent giving the team their first win against Whitman. Warner is still undefeated and the team plays Poolesville on Dec 20. “It was a great win for us and it definitely was a team effort to get this win,” Tritto said.
