JV Basketball: New coach, freshmen preparing for success

JV+Basketball%3A+New+coach%2C+freshmen+preparing+for+success

Under new coach Andre Gaines, who is also an assistant coach for the football team, the team will look to build off of last season’s success. Led by returning sophomores Greg Urovsky and Liam Hall, the team looks poised to have another successful season.
The team has played in two scrimmages against Sandy Spring Friends School and Watkins Mill. Both scrimmages were played away. Although they do not keep official score at scrimmages, as it is reset at the beginning of each quarter, the team played fairly well in both games.
The team lost some of last year’s star players, current juniors Charlie Zhang and Zach Nannen, along with sophomore Garrett Koch. Along with the returning sophomores, the team also added a crop of talented freshmen. Freshman guards Jack Lvovsky and Jack Moskowitz should play key roles for the team this season and provide major contributions. Freshman forward Joel Lavalle, younger brother of varsity senior forward Paul Lavalle, is excited for what the season has in store. “We are going to play hard and play as a family,” Lavalle said.
Coach Gaines is replacing last year’s coach Larry Ferrell, who led last year’s team to a 13-3 record. Although the team lost a lot of their scorers from last season, expectations are still high for this year’s team. Urovsky and Hall should lead the scoring along with Lvovsky and sophomore small forward Chris Vondas, who is playing for the first time. “I am really looking forward to the season. It should be a lot of fun,” Vondas said
The team is scheduled to play 15 games starting off with a home game against Northwest on Dec. 6 at 5:30 p.m., too late to be covered in this issue.
