Summer Sensations Summed Up

Summer+Sensations+Summed+Up

Harambe, Brexit, Pokemon Go and an incredible amount of #parties seen on Twitter. What do these things all have in common? They all took place during summer ‘16.
Whether you went to camp, went halfway across the world or just stayed on your couch eating chips all summer until you remembered to do your AP Lang assignment, the summer was full of exciting and not-so exciting events.
Twitter memes- If you’re one of those people who spent most of their summer on the couch, you probably spent a long time checking twitter, especially if you were attending the #TaylorSwiftisOverParty. For those who don’t know, Swift made a statement saying she was unaware of the line about her in Kanye West’s Famous. Much to Swift’s- and the world’s- shock, West’s wife, Kim Kardashian, had recorded Swift approving the line in the song and was not hesitant to post these videos on her Snapchat story. Not long after these videos were released, fans took twitter by storm to celebrate the end of Taylor Swift with the hashtag #TaylorSwiftisOverParty.
Pokemon Go- Pokemon Go is an augmented reality app that allows any user to use their location in order to catch Pokemon right from their phone, which is basically every Pokemon fan’s dream. Following the release of the app in early July, there have been over 100 million downloads of the game and about 20 million daily users. The game’s popularity allowed it to be the highest grossing app in history, and it only took 13 hours for it to do so. “I have to be honest,” sophomore Kevin Scher said, “I spent more time playing Pokemon this summer than I’d like to admit.”
Harambe- On May 28, a gorilla at the Cincinnati Zoo was shot and killed after a toddler fell into its enclosure. This gorilla’s name was Harambe. Zoo officials, fearing for the child’s life, felt as if they had no choice whether or not to shoot Harambe. The incident, filmed on camera, went viral not long after it was posted on Youtube. Harambe became the prime subject of Twitter memes because many users felt like the killing of the 17-year-old gorilla was unjust.
Brexit- In June, the UK left the European Union. If you’re like me, you don’t really understand what that means because you couldn’t care less about European politics. Here’s what happened. The United Kingdom (Great Britain, Scotland, and other small islands) held a referendum (a vote by the electorate) to leave the European Union (EU). Again, if you have no clue what the EU is, it’s a political union of 28 European states that intends to “ensure the free movement of people, goods, services, and capital within the internal market.” Fifty-two percent of the people who voted in the referendum were in favor of leaving the EU.
Summer ‘16 was a big one. Drake and Rihanna started dating, One Direction basically disbanded, My Chemical Romance announced a reboot and Finding Dory was released. This summer is drawing to a close and the temperature is starting to drop, so hopefully winter break will be here any minute.
